In our fast-paced world organization is a useful asset that will be invaluable in all areas of your child’s life. Organization does not often come naturally. It must be learned.

Your child has Library homework every weekend to aid in this endeavor. He/She must completely empty and wipe out the schoolbag. Then your child should make three piles: throw away, return to school, and save at home. Papers that your child would like to save should be placed in a portfolio. This can be created by folding a sheet of poster paper in half and stapling the sides. Your child can have fun decorating it.

Your child should reload the backpack in the following manner. The large pocket in the very back of the schoolbag should contain items that are made of paper (textbooks, notebooks, folders and library books). This should be loaded with the heaviest items at the very back with all papers kept neatly in folders. All items that could potentially harm the items made of paper should be distributed among the other pockets in the schoolbag with glue, water bottles, juice, snacks, etc. kept in Ziploc bags.

Ask your child’s teacher for other organizational ideas.
